You too must have good hope towards death, judges, and hold this one truth in mind: that no evil can happen to a good man, either in life or after death, and his affairs are not neglected by the gods. My current situation has not happened by chance; it is clear to me that it was better for me to die now and be released from my troubles. That is why the divine sign did not turn me back, and why I am not entirely angry with those who condemned me or with my accusers. Though they did not condemn and accuse me with this intention, but thinking they would harm me, for which they deserve blame. However, I beg this one thing from them: when my sons grow up, punish them, gentlemen, and pain them in the very same way I pained you, if they seem to you to care about money or anything else before virtue. And if they think they are somebody when they are nobody, reproach them just as I reproached you, that they do not care for what they should, and think they are something when they are worth nothing. If you do this, I will have received justice from you, both I and my sons. But now it is time to depart. For me to die, and for you to live. Which of us goes to the better thing is unclear to everyone, except the god.
